Every community has a leader called the chief.He is the one who goes ahead and others follow.He gives others and they are carried out.Animals found this order among men better than the anarchy existing among them.They held several conferences to debate the question of chieftaincy in their midst. Some animals proposed lion for their chief because of his ferocity. they thought he will be the one to defend the animals from their enemies.Some said he might turn them into his slaves whenever he got angry.His candidature was not accepted.A group of animals were for Elephant. they said his size alone calls for respect.Many animals rejected to this on the ground that in the event of famine in the village, he shall eat up the other animals to maintain his size.He was rejected.
They agreed on one thing,that they should choose a chief, the fastest runner among them.Such a one will be of greater service ,especially,during war times to run round quickly to inform everybody of the impending danger.In order to choose the fastest runner, it needed a race to . all agreed to meet the resting day for the competition. They had to cover a distance of three villages all put together.A throne was put a the winning point for the victorious one.The day came. The animals assembled at the starting point. Chameleon joined the race.He knew that Antelope was the fastest runner,so he kept close to him.Once the signal was given to start, he gripped the tail who did not feel it. Antelope left the rest of the animals two villages behind him.He got to winning point satisfied with his skill.Just before he sat on the throne, Chameleon had sprung on to it.He shouted,"EH EH! Do not sit on me.Before you arrive,I was already sitting here''.
Antelope was astonished. The news went round that Chameleon had won the race.The rest of the animals still running called off the race. Many doubted his speed. Others questioned who invited him to join the race.An immediate council of animals was held.They agreed that if Chameleon was going to be their chief they better do without one. That is why animals have no chief till this day.
